Civil War Passes. Seven passes issued to Washington Middler between November 1861 and September 1863. They include two Officer's Passes and a Citizens' Pass from Camp Douglas (Illinois) and a Chicago City Railway Military Pass, and a pass from the Provost Marshal's Office in Vicksburg, Miss.; these are all partly printed. Two handwritten passes are from the 12th Ills. Cav. Camp Illinois Va. and from Camp Wool, Martinsburg, Shenandoah Valley, Va. All are soiled and affixed to one page, on the verso of which is an Oct. 1861 letter authorizing Middler to recruit and organize a company of light infantry for the 53rd Regt. Il. Vols. Also included is Middler's appointment to the U.S. Christian Commission, a philantropic and religious group which ministered to soldiers, and a Lincoln/Hamlin ticket for the 1860 election. Condition of all items is good to very good.
