Lot 568

1854 N-7 R2 Repunched 1 & 4 PCGS graded MS64 Red. Bright original mint red just starting to mellow to bluish steel brown on the highpoints, 85% of the original color remaining. The only marks, and they are barely visible, are a small planchet flake on the rim right of star 11, a tiny nick on the rim under the 4, and a speck of darker toning on the cheek under the eye. M-LDS, die state b. The repunching left of the base of the 1 is weak but visible while the repunching on the 4 is gone. A shallow low spot (from debris on the die) covers much of the neck, as usual on this die state, and a smaller low spot is located at EN in CENT. A beautiful, very impressive cent. Our grade is MS65. CC#1 for the variety in the Grellman census. The next best is the MS64 example from the Naftzger collection, and it has far less mint color (our sale 9/7/2009:1194).
Estimated Value $1,500-UP.

Realized $2,760
