Lot 388

1817 N-13 R1 MS60+. Lustrous light steel brown with darker bluish steel overtones on the reverse and generous traces of the mint color remaining on both sides. The fields are smooth and glossy offering a hint of reflectivity thanks to new dies. No spots or stains. The only defects are a few minor nicks, including a couple left of star 8 and a shallow one in the center of the neck. Nicely struck EDS with a strong die line connecting the base of the I to the adjacent C in AMERICA. Most likely from the famous Randall Hoard of mint state cents discovered at the end of the US Civil War. Noyes photo #34670. An attractive cent that comes with a nice provenance.
Estimated Value $800-UP.
Ex Tony Terranova-Dr. George E. Ewing-Del Bland-R. S. Brown, Jr., Superior 9/30/1986:476-Stuart A. Hodge.
