Lot 387

1817 N-12 R3 AU50. Glossy medium brown and darker chocolate, the right half of both sides the darker of the two colors. Frosty lighter steel brown toning shows in the protected areas on both sides and there are no notable contact marks or spots. A shallow low spot caused by debris on the die shows in the field at the bust tip, and the strike on the upper half of the hair buns is a bit weak, as usual on this variety. LDS with the obverse die cracks strong. A small internal cud break extends the left side of star 1 and the area outlined by die cracks at stars 1-3 is starting to sink as a retained cud. Ranked as high as CC#5 in the overall condition census for the variety but second finest known of the rare later die state (the finest of the die state is the slightly superior Newcomb:506-Starr:92 example). Called AU50 net EF40 in the Noyes census, his photo #20808. Bland says AU50 and CC#5 overall. Removed from a PCGS slab graded AU58 (PCGS label included, #36583.58/13079750, and it shows the attribution and Naftzger provenance). An important cent that comes with an impressive provenance.
Estimated Value $4,000-UP.
