Lot 386

1817 N-12 R3 EF40+. Glossy chocolate brown with slightly darker olive and steel toning covering most of the obverse. Lustrous lighter brown faded down from mint color covers the protected areas on the reverse. The only notable signs of contact are a couple very thin but relatively long nicks in the field above star 12. The fields are smooth and very glossy offering excellent eye appeal, especially on the reverse. MDS. A branch crack reaches down to the dentils from star 1 but the triangle outlined by die cracks at the left of star 1 has not started to rise. A very nice example of this tough variety. Called EF40 net VF35 by Noyes, his photo #33301.
Estimated Value $2,000-UP.
Ex McCawley & Grellman Auctions 1/5/1991:106-Walter Dudgeon, McCawley & Grellman Auctions 7/30/1994:19.
