Lot 371

1817 N-5 R3 AU58. Choice lustrous medium brown and light olive with slightly darker steel brown toning on the highpoints. Great eye appeal, just a hint of friction on the highest points from mint state. The best identifying marks are a tiny streak of darker toning down from the lower right point of star 8 and a small spot of similar toning over star 11. Nicely struck E-MDS showing radial lines in all the stars and very fine radial die flowlines in the fields. The repunching on the left base of the N in ONE is strong and most of the dentils on the reverse are visible. Called AU55 net AU50 and tied for CC#14 in the Noyes census, his photo #25221. Removed from an NGC slab graded MS62BN (NGC label included, #509388-001, and it shows the attribution and Rasmussen provenance). A beautiful cent that comes with an important provenance.
Estimated Value $500-UP.
Ex Howard R. Newcomb, J. C. Morgenthau & Co. 5/16/1945:499-Floyd T. Starr, Stack's 6/13/1984:84 (as MS60)-Wes Rasmussen, Heritage 1/13/2005:3379. Comes with the Newcomb-Starr collection box.
