Lot 2407

1794. NGC graded MS-62. Very well struck, remarkably so, frosty and untoned. Only 7,756 minted of which merely 550 examples are estimated to have survived. A splendid specimen, significantly above average in striking, with pleasing surfaces and memorable eye appeal. All told this is a desirable early Flowing Hair coin for the type set collector or the numismatist who systematically acquires a Mint quality Type Set. The obverse shows the tresses of Liberty nearly full, the stars are full, the bold, and the entire picture is one of beauty. The fields are silvery with delicate luster throughout. The reverse is of similarly quality, with all features delineated, and most of them sharp.

Half dimes of the Flowing Hair type were made only with two dates, 1794 and 1795. Although the dies for 1794, as here, were made up in that particular year, no half dimes were struck until 1795. Today, examples of both years are quite elusive, the 1794 being more so. The vast majority of existing pieces are worn, VG to VF for the most part. Mint State coins are scarce, and in the combination of choice Mint State plus eye appeal, as here, the importance doubly so. Pop 6; 34 finer.
Estimated Value $15,000 - 17,000.
