1840-C Large Diameter. NGC graded EF-45. Only 18,992 struck of which only about 500 are estimated to have survived. Normal lack of detail in some of the features such as stars and eagle plumage. This is only the third issue by the branch mint at Charlotte, North Carolina, which opened in 1838 and struck half eagles (primarily) as well as some gold dollars, quarter eagles and $3 gold -- until, that is, 1861, when the Mint was shut by the Confederacy.
