Lot 137

1794 S-31 R1 VG10. Blundered Edge Letters. Sharpness VF35 or slightly better but the planchet is dark and covered with light roughness, strongest on the obverse. No verdigris, and the only marks are a faint, old scrape on the cheek, a thin nick up from the bottom of the pole, and a pair of dull rim nicks over the B in LIBERTY. Frosty dark steel and olive. The date and legends are bold except for strike weakness at ITE in UNITED. The edge lettering is blundered with "HUNDRED FOR" reading "HUNDREDOR." This was caused by operator error when the mint worker failed to reset the Castaing edge-lettering machine to the proper starting position before applying the edge lettering to the planchet.
Estimated Value $400-UP.
Lawrie Rhoads collection.

Realized $506
