Lot 1163

1839-O. PCGS graded EF-45. Nice even surfaces and untoned. Only 17,781 minted of which merely 400 examples are estimated to have survived. 1839-O, being the first Quarter Eagle struck at the New Orleans Mint, is scarce, with the typically encountered grade being VF or, occasionally, low-end EF. Any coin in EF45 or finer grade is a rarity. At the time, the numismatic community--consisting of no more than a couple hundred widely scattered enthusiasts at most--took no notice of mintmarks, and not even the Mint Cabinet saved specimens (PCGS # 7701) .
Estimated Value $1,100 - 1,200.
The William H & Beuelaress K. Helem Collection.

Realized $2,185
