Lot 1151

1836. Script 8. PCGS graded MS-61. A pleasing frosty untoned example. The Classic Head quarter eagles of 1834-39 are interesting and popular to collect by date and mint, there being no "impossible" rarities. However, finding pieces in Mint State can be a challenge. When such an opportunity occurs, a specimen is likely to be dated 1834, the first year of issue. While the 1836, as here, registered a higher production quantity, the design was no longer a novelty, and few were set aside as souvenirs.

The obverse and reverse are lustrous with subtle light yellow gold. The striking is quite sharp around the borders, less so at the centers, this being typical. All told this is one of the nicer entry-level Mint State 1836 quarter eagles to come on the market in the present period. It will answer well a call from the generalist, the Script 8 in the date adding appeal. Similarly, it would be a grand addition to a gold type set. Pop 23; 95 finer (PCGS # 7694) .
Estimated Value $2,800 - 3,000.
