Dewey, George (1837-1917) The only person in U.S. history to attain the rank of Admiral of the Navy; best known for his victory at the Battle of Manila during the Spanish American War. Autograph Letter Signed in full, four pages, 8 x 5 inches, on stationery engraved "The Homestead…Hot Springs, Va, Aug. 4, 1901." To (Rear Admiral William T.) Swinburne (1847-1928). In part: "The order of the Secretary in relation to the ships will require considerable thought before answering and I am glad you are to have a meeting of the Executive Com. before you sail….Mrs. Dewey joins me in warmest remembrances…."
