[1861 Petition to President Abraham Lincoln], Manuscript letter signed by Frank Street, D. (Dexter) C. Bloomer, W.W. Raymond, and Caleb Baldwin, one page, 10 x 8 inches, Council Bluffs, Iowa, August 16, 1861. To "His Excellency President Abraham Lincoln" regarding the appointment of C. (Calchill) E. Stone as District Judge for the Territory of Utah. In part, "…Mr. Stone is a Lawyer of many years standing, is a man of good moral character, and has labor diligently and faithfully for the success of the Republican Party since its first organization…." Minor smudging in blank upper right corner, else fine. Council Bluffs was the historic starting point of the Mormon Trail and eventual northernmost anchor town of the other emigrant trails. C.E. Stone became mayor of the city. Caleb Baldwin became chief justice of the supreme court of Iowa and later mayor of Council Bluffs, and was also commissioner to award Alabama claims. Fran Street became county judge and later mayor. D.C. Bloomer was a writer, newspaper publisher, and politician, as well as the husband of women's rights advocate Amelia Jenks Bloomer.
