Lot 621

1851 Large Cent with Danish West Indies Counterstamp AG3. The large cent is moderately corroded causing many of the cent details to be weak or distorted, but the crowned FR/VII counterstamp (for Frederik VII of Denmark, 1848-1863) is clear and deeply impressed. Rather glossy chocolate brown with shallow greenish verdigris in protected areas, including in the recesses of the counterstamp. This stamp was for the Danish West Indies (now the U.S. Virgin Islands) and it was applied to circulating U.S. and world coins between 1849-1859. Many counterfeits of this rare counterstamp are known, and this cent comes with a tag from NGC stating "NOT ENCAPSULATED" and "AUTHENTICITY UNVERIFIABLE." The piece looks good, but we defer to NGC on this one. Careful inspection is recommended.
Estimated Value $100-UP.
