Lot 560

1799 S-189 R2 VG7. Sharpness F15 but covered with fine roughness, strongest in the protected areas. There are traces of very shallow planchet scale in some of the protected areas but no verdigris. The only notable marks are a small rim nick left of the upper edge of the hair ribbon and a couple tiny nicks at the base of the 17 in the date. Slightly glossy dark olive and steel with lighter chocolate brown toning on the highpoints. The obverse displays a considerable amount of gloss thanks to some very light burnishing done long ago, but the reverse is closer to matte. E-MDS, Breen state II. The shallow lump over T in CENT is present but weak and there is no die crumbling in the dentils at F-A. The bottom of the date is relatively weak, which Breen mentions as normal for this die state, while the legends on both sides are complete and clear.
Estimated Value $2,000-UP.

Realized $6,325
