Lot 559

1798 S-187 R1 Style II Hair, Small 8. NGC graded MS-65. Lustrous light golden olive and steel brown with hints of very faded mint color showing through in protected areas, especially on the reverse. Great eye appeal, just a few minor marks from perfect. These include a small spot of darker olive brown toning above the N in ONE, a speck of carbon inside the C in AMERICA, and a fine scratch near the dentil tips from below the 1 in the denominator to above the U in UNITED. Nicely struck E-MDS, Breen state II. The usual die cracks arcing through TY and in the field before the portrait are clear but the small cud break at the dentils opposite the chin has not formed. Called MS65 "Choice" and tied for CC#1 honors in the Noyes census, his photo #33953. Bland says AU55 and tied for CC#4 in the Bland/Breen census. Our grade is MS62.
Estimated Value $25,000-UP.
