Lot 557

1798 S-178 R5+ Style II Hair with Small 8, Reverse of 1796 Fair-2. The obverse is AG3 while the reverse shows much more wear and grades only Basal State-1. The planchet is smooth, completely free of corrosion or verdigris, and the only marks are a few inconsequential rim bruises. The date is easily readable even though the bottom is starting to wear into the rim, and the die cracks through the date and up from the bust are easily visible. The only designs that remain visible on the reverse are at the top where TATE and the all-important single terminal leaves still show (the Reverse of 1796). Late die state. Recolored glossy chocolate and olive brown. A well-worn but easily attributable example of this rare and very popular "Redbook" variety.
Estimated Value $400-UP.

Realized $604
