Lot 556

1798 S-175 R3 Style II Hair, Small 8. PCGS graded AU-50. Attractive glossy light to medium chocolate brown with frosty lighter steel brown toning in protected areas, especially on the reverse. A small puff of darker olive toning shows in the field before the eye. Sharply struck with excellent eye appeal. The only marks are a couple old, light hairline scratches at LI, another even lighter one slanting from the temple to the upper lip, and one between the F in OF and the adjacent A. All these fine scratches blend perfectly into the attractive natural toning. LDS, Breen state VI, with a strong cud break connecting the U in UNITED to the rim. All the fine die cracks described by Breen for the latest die state are clear. Our grade is EF40+, close to EF45. An important cent, CC#5 for the variety. Apparently a new discovery, not listed by Noyes or Bland.
Estimated Value $3,000-UP.
