Lot 543

1795 S-76b R1 Plain Edge G6. Flipover Double Strike. Sharpness F15 or slightly better on the lower half of the obverse, but the upper half of the obverse and the entire reverse are covered with light to moderate corrosion. Shallow greenish verdigris shows around the date and under the bust tip. The only notable sign of contact is a small rim nick left of the bottom of the cap. Partly glossy dark olive mixed with lighter chocolate toning on the lower half of the obverse where the surface is smooth and attractive. This piece was struck slightly off center to K-5, then flipped over and struck a second time with the second strike reasonably well centered on the planchet. Undertype from the initial strike shows on both sides. TATES from STATES is visible slightly above LIBER and the bust tip from that initial strike is visible at CA in AMERICA. In addition, the 17 of the date from the first strike can be made out where the denominator of the fraction should be located. Too bad about the corrosion because this is a very rare type of mint error.
Estimated Value $200-UP.

Realized $483
