Lot 4043

Kingdom of Macedon. Alexander III, the Great, 336-323 BC. Gold Stater (8.53 g) attributed to Babylon, c. 317-311 BC. Head right of Athena wearing triple-crested helmet, decorated with snake, bird on visor. Reverse: Nike standing left, holding wreath and stylis; in lower right field, monogram within wreath; in lower left field, monogram. Price 3724; M. 726. Extremely Fine.

An especially well-defined pair of dies created this coin with wonderful finesse. This issue is sometimes attributed to Seleukos I as Satrap of Syria, but with the inscription of "Alexander," it is placed under the great Macedonian King Alexander III, just as are other posthumous emissions with Alexander's name.
Estimated Value $2,000 - 2,500.
