Goldberg Coins and Collectibles

Lot 1725

1873 U.S. Trade Dollar engraved on reverse. Reverse smoothed and engraved with the swastika symbol. Prior to the National Socialists of Germany corrupting the meaning of this ancient symbol, the swastika traced back thousands of years. It is an equilateral cross with its arms bent at right angles, in either right-facing form or its mirrored left-facing form. Earliest archaeological evidence of swastika-shaped ornaments dates back to the Indus Valley Civilization of Ancient India as well as Classical Antiquity. It remains widely used in Indian Religions, specifically in Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. It was often used as a Good Luck symbol on tokens, medals, and shirt patches up to the advent of Nazism in the 1930s, when it got its current reputation and negative connotations.
Estimated Value $70 - 80.

Realized $144
