Sale 65

Lot 1511

1880. NGC graded Proof 66. A stunning Gem Proof specimen featuring wonderful multi-color iridescent toning on both sides. Only 1,987 Proofs struck for this Proof-only year. With the possible exception of the clandestine 1884 & 1885 issues, all Proof Trade Dollars minted at Philadelphia in 1878-83 were distributed as part of the year's Proof sets. None were created for commercial purposes. Federal records indicate that slightly less than 2,000 specimens were delivered, a total that seems larger than normal for the period given the collector population at this time. Among the survivors, the Gem Proof 66 grade level is typically the highest that collectors can hope to afford since values increase dramatically in 67 and 68.

A conditionally rare Gem, this lovely Proof Trade Dollar is overlaid in toning iridescence that presupposes long, unattended storage, possibly in the original Mint tissue wrappers of the day. The fields are reflective in finish, generously so, the finish may have secured a Cameo designation at NGC were the devices just a bit more frosty in texture. The strike is razor sharp in all areas including the stars, and there is nary a detracting blemish to report. A high-end example in all regards that belongs in an advanced collection of Trade Dollars. Pop 43; 16 in PF-67, 1 in PF-68.
Estimated Value $7,000 - 7,500.
Ex: Las Vegas Collection.
