Late in his life, Adams felt he had been unfairly pidgeon-holed as a nature photographer, and produced Portfolio VI in response. Adams' long-time editor, Nancy Newhall, reflected on the "Beauty-and-the-Beast-in-the-Dark-Wood" quality of "Graduation Dress" in the foreword to the portfolio, emphasizing the mood. While Adams is still widely known as an environmentalist photographer, this image in particular demonstrates his technical prowess and breadth of subject.
