Maurer, Sidney Randolph. Marilyn Monroe Portfolio. Original set of five giclees, each one fully hand-enhanced and signed by the artist. Each image is 19" (h) x 13" (w) on archival paper. Medium is mixed media including acrylic, crayon and ink. This is the first time a set has appeared at auction. The buyer of this set will also receive a copy of Roger Taylor's book, Marilyn In Art. Mr. Maurer is 85 years old and no one knows how many sets of these original Marilyns he will do.
In the early 1960s, Sidney Maurer was a co-worker with Andy Warhol at RCA Records, where they designed and created record covers. Maurer worked in the music industry through the mid-sixties, collaborating with artists such as Donovan, and started to gain recognition for his art. His work appeared in galleries in New York, Los Angeles, and Paris. Up to this point, Mr. Maurer has painted over 325 portraits of the great icons of his time. See maurereditions.com.
He is represented by Marilyn Goldberg, president of Museum Masters International, who represented Picasso and Dali and presently represents Lampiecka, Jerry Garcia and other world-famous personalities for licensing rights.
Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES) has expressed interest in a touring exhibit of Mr. Maurer's works, and the David Dunham Group has signed a contract with Mr. Maurer for a coffee table book. One of his paintings brought $7500 in December 2010 at a Beverly Hills auction.
