Lot 563
Boulier, Lucien. Pare d’une Echarpe. Oil on canvas, 14 x 17 in., matted and framed to 28½ x 31 in. Bust of a young woman with a demure smile who seems to be clad only in the scarf which is tied in a bow around her head. The dots of light which dance on the surface of the canvas make her seem part of the green background. Boulier (1882-1963), who studied in Paris under Gerome at the end of the 19th century, delighted in sensuous nudes. He was asked to exhibit in the Salon d'Automne of 1919, in 1923 at the Nationale, and in many of the Salon des Indépendents exhibits between 1926 and 1936. Estimated Value $5,000 - 7,500.
Lucien Boulier studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he won a first prize medal before withdrawing to study on his own at the Louvre. He was particularly attracted to the work of the impressionists, especially the work of Pierre-Auguste Renoir, whith whom he later studied privately. He was thus Renoir's last student. His work was shown in a number of exhibitions during the 1920s, most notable at Galerie Charpentier in Paris in 1923 and at Wildenstein Gallery in New York in 1924.
