Lot 517
Haley, Bill & Five Comets. Signatures, in brown ink, of Bill Haley, John Ambrose, John Grandee ("Johnny"), Marshall Lytel, Dick Richards and Billy Williamson; 1 page, 7 x 5½ in., no place or date. Very Fine. Some slight tearing at the top margin, not affecting the signatures, easily matted or cropped out. Accompanied by an original 10 x 8 in. black and white glossy of the group. At a Decca session on April 12, 1954, Haley and his Comets recorded "Rock Around the Clock" as a favor to Haley’s manager, who had written the song 18 months earlier. The single sold moderately well, but it was Haley’s follow-up, "Shake, Rattle and Roll," that reached the Top Ten. This naturally prompted Decca to re-release "Clock" and the rest is history. Estimated Value $300 - 500.
