Saint Gaudens, Augustus (1848-1907) Irish-born American sculptor. He designed monuments for several Civil War heroes, as well as coins for the U.S. Mint, including the $20 "double eagle" gold piece, which is considered the most beautiful American coin ever issued. Signnature and date, "Augustus Saint-Gaudens / February 8th 1905" on 3¼ x 4¾ in. paper. Lightly toned and soiled.
