Mountbatten, Louis F (1900-1979) British statesman, admiral, son of Prince Louis of Battenberg, great-grandson of Queen Victoria, assassinated by the Irish Republican Army. Autograph Manuscript Signed "Battenberg"on page 10, as a teenage midshipman during WW I, 13¼ x 8 in., 1917, aboard WW I battleship HMS Queen Elizabeth. The manuscript is titled "Construction 35" on 1st page, which shows through rectangular opening on hard cover, stamped "L.F. Mountbatten, R.N." on cover and 1st page with original hand drawings and over 1,200 words in his hand, approximately 35 pages (the remainder of the approximately 140 pages are blank), filled with detailed engineering drawings & notes on a variety of subjects including vessel's layout, turbine operation, crew matters, hold plan, anchoring arrangement, daily rations, etc. In 1916, at age 16, Mountbatten was assigned as Midshipman to Admiral Beatty's flagship HMS Lion. In Feb 1917 he transferred to HMS Queen Elizabeth. Later in 1917 the family changed their name from Battenberg to Mountbatten, which sounded less German.
