Gladstone, William (1809-98) British statesman; served as prime minister four times. Letter Signed ("W Gladstone"), 2 pages, 7 x 4½ in., Hawarden NW, June 1 (18)55. To the publisher John Murray, asking for information on the printer to whom he would like to send a manuscript on Sardinian affairs and adding, "Some persons have prevailed upon me that I should correct and publish a speech which I delivered in the Debate of last week with respect to War and Peace. …" Light foxing, else Fine. Gladstone was opposed to the Crimean War, then raging in Turkey, at the cost of 18,000 British casualties.
