Lot 1279

Apollo 17, FLOWN Lunar Surface US Flag (4x6") in unmounted condition. A copy (?) of a 1975 typed letter on NASA letterhead stationary is included that reads, in part: "Dear Al: This flag of our nation flew to the moon aboard the spaceships "America" and "Challenger", Apollo XVII, December 6-19, 1972….Please accept this flag with the pride the heritage of our country so righteously deserves". The letter is signed by Gene Cernan and Ron Evans. There has been question raised in the past as to the legitimacy of flags distributed with this letter as only one presentation letter has shown up previously. This letter, addressed to a second NASA employee, should dispel any questions that collectors may have about this piece. Elsewhere in this sale, we have an Apollo 14 Flown beta cloth helmet bag distributed with a similar type letter. This seems to imply that, although rare, similar distribution of flown artifacts by the crews happened and are completely legitimate.
Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,500.

Realized $1,770
