Mercury Program, c1980s, NASA "Appreciation" Plaque (14x11") A very unusual plaque presented by NASA to Deke Slayton in honor of his contributions to the space program. The inscription plate reads: "Presented to Donald K. Slayton / In recognition of his vision, dedication and outstanding leadership as a key member of the team of space pioneers who have made space operations a reality". Metal replicas of crew patches from Mercury through the early Shuttle flights are around the edges. Deke's influence on the American space program exceeded that of any of the other astronauts. This plaque is probably unique.
