Sale 63

Lot 638

1877. PCGS graded Proof 64 Red & Brown PQ CAC Approved. Housed in a new secure plus holder. Lovely colors. Only 900 Proofs struck. A popular key date. With a mintage like this it may surprise collectors that the Proof 1877 Indian Head cent is comparable in overall rarity to the other Proof cents of the 1870s. The key point is, the elusiveness of business strike 1877 cents shifts considerable date collector pressure to most available Proof specimens. Above the Gem grade level, however, the few certified representatives possess prices which often top an average buyer's budget. Thus, Proof 64 is an ideal compromise because it retains much of the beauty and pizzazz of the higher grade with a ready affordability.

This is simply a glorious, lustrous specimen. Nicely reflective, the surfaces beam their red luster outward in all directions, while the strike extracts every last design feature. Free of both hairlines and carbon spots, it is little wonder that this coin is expected to attract many bids. Pop 134; 68 finer, 63 in 65, 5 in 66 (PCGS # 2319) .
Estimated Value $3,000 - 3,200.

Realized $3,910
