Lot 95

1845 N-4 R1 MS62+. Glossy steel brown and chocolate with 25% of the original mint red remaining. Choice except for a small, light nick on the right end of the eyebrow, another on the chin, and an even smaller one between stars 5 & 6. M-LDS, die state e early. A fine die crack passes through the tops of ME to the dentils over the adjacent A, but it does not extend to the R. The repunching on the 5 remains visible. Nicely struck except for the coronet over LIB, which is a bit soft. Great eye appeal for the grade, very close to MS63. This cent is plated inside the back cover (left side) in the second edition (1987) of the Grellman book on the cents of 1840-57. (Note: Wes Rasmussen designed the inside covers for the 1987 edition of the Grellman attribution guide, and he selected some visually appealing late date cents from his personal collection to complement the design. Dan Holmes attempted over the years to acquire as many of those cents as possible, and this is one of them. There are several more of them in this sale, all identified as plated in the 1987 edition.) DWH #1837.
Estimated Value $500-UP.
