Lot 793

1796 S-91 R3 Liberty Cap VG10. Flipover Triple Strike with 3 Dates. Sharpness VF20 but covered with microscopic porosity, strongest on the reverse. No marks or verdigris. Slightly glossy dark steel and olive blending into dark chocolate. This cent was struck three times and (remarkably) all 3 of the dates remain visible. One strike (probably the first) was nearly centered on the planchet. Another strike (probably the second when the struck cent failed to eject completely) was about 30% off center. A third strike (probably the last) was centered on the planchet after it was flipped over. This third strike left the dominant impression on both sides, but strong evidence of the first two impressions remains. This includes three dates, one on the "obverse" and two on the "reverse." In addition to the "796" under the portrait on the dominant obverse, another "796" is visible at the D in UNITED and a third "96" is visible under AT in STATES. Much additional undertype is visible on both sides. This one is worth examining just for the enjoyment of studying such an egregious mint error.
Estimated Value $3,000-UP.

Realized $6,325
