Lot 775

1794 S-34 R5+ VF30. Sharpness EF40 but lightly cleaned and retoned an attractive frosty light chocolate brown blended with a hint of reddish brown toning in the hair under the cap and at TAT in STATES. The surfaces are decent but not perfectly smooth, especially in the field under the cap where there are traces of extremely fine porosity. The best identifying marks are a tiny planchet chip between the bottoms of the 7 & 9 in the date and a rim bruise at the M in AMERICA. E-MDS, Breen state II. Sharply struck and attractive in spite of the minor distractions. Clearly sharper than the Husak-Boka VF30, which was considered the finest known outside the VF35 impounded in the American Numismatic Society collection. This piece is in a slightly earlier die state than any of the other nice ones in the Noyes census. An important, high condition census example of this rare variety, arguably the finest available outside the ANS Museum. Recently discovered unattributed in a small collection.
Estimated Value $20,000-UP.

Realized $42,550
