Lot 71

1844 N-1 R8 (as a proof). PCGS graded Proof 63 Brown. Lightly cleaned, now retoned golden light brown with light reddish steel brown toning in protected areas. The fields are nicely reflective with moderately deep mirrors, and they show many of the very tiny struck-through lint marks characteristic of proof strikes. The notable struck-through marks in the fields are a small one just right of the lower edge of star 3, another down from the right point of star 11, plus many microscopic ones in the left obverse field. Sharply struck with full radial lines in all the stars except for #13, which shows minor weakness in the center. The fields are covered with extremely fine die polishing lines. Struck very slightly off center to K-6. A tiny speck of carbon at the upper left point of star 10 and a microscopic pinprick under the right side of star 5 are the only other flaws, and they can help identify this important cent. A beautiful piece with great eye appeal. Our grade is Proof-60, tied for finest known honors with the only other proof example listed in the Grellman census. Called Proof-63 and finest of two known in the Denis Loring census of Proof large cents. Del Bland calls this piece Proof-55 in his census. This is the only certified proof example of the variety as PCGS has decided the other example listed by Loring and Grellman is a business strike. The attribution and Dan Holmes provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; the only Proof example of the variety graded at PCGS. DWH #1856 (PCGS # 397602) .
Estimated Value $10,000-UP.
Ex Stack's (privately) 1988-Denis Loring-R. S. Brown, Jr. 4/17/99.
