Lot 6

1840 N-5 R1 Large Date MS63. Frosty steel brown with 10% of the mint red remaining. The only marks are a few trivial nicks, including a tiny diagonal one under the eye and another in the field before the lower lip, plus a small spot of slightly darker brown toning midway between star 1 and the chin. The surfaces are satiny and lustrous. M-LDS, die state c, with a series of small but clearly defined rim cud breaks from star 6 to star above star 10. Tied for CC#2. Removed from a PCGS slab graded MS64RB (old green PCGS label included). This is the plate coin for the die state in the 2001 edition of the Grellman book. A choice, very attractive cent. DWH #2178.
Estimated Value $800-UP.
