Lot 587

1854 N-3 R1 Stray 4 in Curl MS63. Lustrous light bluish steel brown with 15% very faded mint red remaining, mostly on the reverse. The fields are satiny and virtually flawless. The best identifying marks are a tiny planchet flake on the rim at star 5 (as struck) and a tiny vertical swipe of darker steel toning on the bust over the 8. Sharply struck E-MDS, die state a. The fine die line through star 6 is clear and the 4 embedded in the curls over the left top of the 5 is bold. A very attractive cent, tied for CC#1 honors in the Grellman census. DWH #2229.
Estimated Value $300-UP.
Ex McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Superior 10/2000:1491-Chris McCawley-McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Superior 2/24/03:490.
