Great Britain. Proof Crown, 1818. ESC-212; Linecar and Stone-197; S.3787. George III, 1760-1820. Edge LVIII. Obverse: Laureate head of king by Pistrucci right. GEORGIUS III D:G:BRITANNIARUM REX F:D: 1818. Reverse: St. George and dragon within garter. HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE. Edge year and inscription in large raised letters. The portrait, lettering, and reverse design are heavily frosted with contrasting mirrorlike fields. Deeply toned. An exceptional specimen, and truly rare. NGC graded Proof 63.

* Linecar and Stone describe this piece (page 50) after listing various unadopted patterns for this issue. 'Here is the finished crown, depicting how it was thought his subjects ought to see the king - a comparatively young man with a wreath of laurels around his head, as if he had just won some athletic contest or was about to speak to his people as their omnipotent ruler. Instead, he was an old man, mentally deranged, blind, with long white hair and a flowing beard.'.
