Lot 396

1850 N-7 R2 MS64+. Mint red mellowing to bluish steel brown, about half the red remaining, although it has faded down considerably from its original brilliance. No carbon spots, stains, or other defects. Attractive satiny luster covers both sides, even the highpoints. The best identifying marks are a tiny speck of darker toning close over star 5 and a tiny planchet chip at the base of the dentils under the 5 in the date, as struck. M-LDS die state b, the usual hoard die state for this variety. The fields are flowlined and the die lines at the inner curl are weak. A beautiful cent, very close to gem. Removed from an NGC slab graded MS66RB (NGC label included). DWH #2222.
Estimated Value $500-UP.
Ex McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Superior 2/24/03:424.
