Lot 387

1849 N-30 R6 AU55. Frosty light olive and golden brown with darker steel overtones, especially on the obverse. The fields are smooth and slightly reflective. Mint state sharpness with several carbon spots on both sides, the largest of these at the dentils over star 11 and under the tip of the wreath stem. There is a very light rim bruise right of star 9 and another over the I in AMERICA. EDS, die state a, without any crumbling inside the top of the N in ONE. Several examples of this variety were called proof strikes by Breen (who incorrectly called them early strikes of N-1) and Loring, and NGC has even certified a few as proofs. In Grellman's opinion, all N-30 examples are business strikes and only the early strikes exhibit reflective fields. But the sharpness and eye appeal of the early strikes are outstanding. Tied for CC#4 of this rare die variety, and the finest is a prooflike gem that resides in the ANS collection. DWH #1867.
Estimated Value $1,500-UP.
