Lot 379

1849 N-25 R7 F12. Sharpness EF40 with a half dozen hairline scratches across the obverse and a similar number of light rim bruises on both sides, strongest at star 2 and under the stem tip. Glossy medium brown and chocolate with frosty lighter brown toning in the protected areas. The attribution points are very clear and the overall eye appeal is decent in spite of the marks. All known examples display identical die states, which attests to the short marriage of these two obviously imperfect dies. Tied for CC#3 of only 7 known. One of the key die varieties in a collection of late date large cents. DWH #1920.
Estimated Value $1,000-UP.
Ex J. R. Grellman 4/94-J. R. Frankenfield, McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Superior 2/17/01:1557.
