Lot 367

1849 N-18 R6 Proof-Only. PCGS graded Proof 65 Red & Brown. Very attractive light bluish steel brown faded down from mint color with 30% of the red remaining on the obverse, 15% on the reverse. The fields are nicely reflective with moderate to deep mirrors, deepest on the obverse. There is a very light nick well hidden on the leaf under UN, a tiny chip on the front edge of the coronet (as struck), and a barely visible spot of dark toning between the upper left points of star 6. None of these marks is at all distracting or visible without the aid of a strong glass, but they can help identify this cent in the future. This is a choice, very attractive proof large cent, close to gem. Called Proof-64 and tied for finest known honors in the Loring census. Our grade is Proof-64, tied for CC#1 in the Grellman census. The attribution and Dan Holmes provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; none finer in Proof Red & Brown at PCGS for the variety. DWH #1866 (PCGS # 400589) .
Estimated Value $10,000-UP.
