Lot 351

(1849) Blank Planchet, probably made for 1849 cents with beveled edges (N-5 & N-8) AU50. Glossy chocolate brown. Essentially new with frosty surfaces, but lightly scratched on one side with "CC/M/1857" in three lines. The edges of this planchet are clearly different than on any other blank planchets in either stage I (rims not upset) or stage II (rims upset ready for striking). Weight 166.5 grains. This planchet helps explain the oddly beveled edges seen on the two 1849 varieties mentioned (N-5 & N-8) and possibly a few of the Newcomb-4 variety such as the third one offered earlier. The beveled edges match perfectly when compared to struck cents of those varieties. I suspect this planchet was either supplied by a different vendor or was part of a trial to find better designs to help feed planchets into and out of the presses. This is the only blank with beveled edges seen or heard of by Grellman. Comes with an interesting very old envelope marked "Copper/U.S./Blank Large Cent/Phila Mint/1850" in excellent (and very old) penmanship. The 1850 date would help confirm the connection to the die varieties of 1849. A very significant piece. DWH #2251.
Estimated Value $500-UP.
