Lot 3066

Kingdom of Thrace. Lysimachos, 323-281 BC. AR Tetradrachm (17.07 g) minted posthumously at Kios, c. 270-240 BC. Diademed head right of the deified Alexander the Great wearing the horn of Ammon above ear. Reverse: Athena Nikephoros enthroned left, holding Nike in her extended right hand, resting left elbow on shield with aegis; in left field, club and monogram; in exergue, ear of grain. Cf. Thompson (Essays Robinson) 180; Müller 409. Traces of luster; Extremely Fine.

Before this hoard was discovered, the Lysimachean coinage was thought to be more limited from Kios in Bithynia. The celator who engraved the reverse die accomplished an unusually well-detailed composition; the angle of Athena's head and the finesse of her facial features are outstanding.
Estimated Value $500 - 600.

Realized $460
