Lot 3053

Kingdom of Macedon. Alexander III, the Great, 336-323 BC. Gold Stater (8.43 g) minted possibly at Magnesia ad Maeandrum, c. 305-297 BC, or perhaps later. Head right of Athena wearing triple-crested helmet, decorated with snake. Reverse: Nike standing left, holding wreath and stylis; monogram and letters in fields. Price 1997; Müller 788. A few hairlines in fields. Superb Extremely Fine.

A provocative coin with the obverse portrait closer to Antigonos and others. A Thracian issue is also possible. The final reverse inscription letter seems missing, but may just be off the flan.
Estimated Value $2,000 - 3,000.

Realized $5,175
