Lot 183

1847 N-3 R3 Repunched Date MS60. Glossy steel brown with delicate overtones of bluish steel and 10% of the mint red remaining, mostly on the reverse. Would rate a slightly higher grade except for a small spot of dark olive toning in the field close to the main curl and reddish chocolate brown toning at D-STATES-OF-AMER. The surfaces are covered with attractive satiny mint luster, especially on the obverse. Terminal die state, die state f (Newcomb’s old #33), with four small but strong rim cud breaks on the reverse at ST, S-O, ER and OF. Only a hint of repunching remains visible inside the top of the 8. Tied for CC#4 of less than two dozen known with the four rim cuds. DWH #2277.
Estimated Value $400-UP.
Ex Freeman, Kreisberg & Schulman 5/24/58:1292-R. E. Naftzger, Jr. (via Bill Noyes) 3/10/04.
