Lot 16

1840 N-10 R2 Large Date EF45. A mint state cent that has a scrape in the rim under the 84 of the date plus a series of rim nicks and shallow rim scrapes from star 2 to star 8. The surfaces inside the rims are choice except for a minor scuff left of star 6 and a few other microscopic marks. Nice eye appeal in spite of the rim marks. Lustrous light olive brown with a streak of slightly darker olive brown toning from the U in UNITED to the second S in STATES. Traces of faded mint color remain in protected areas, especially on the reverse. LDS, die state d (Newcomb’s old #11), with a strong rim cud at stars 9-10 plus a thin one down to star 11. This is the Grellman plate coin for the die state in his 2001 edition of the attribution guide for the series. It was selected for this purpose because the rim cuds are so clearly defined on this example. DWH #2179.
Estimated Value $300-UP.
