Lot 134

1846 N-5 R2 Repunched Date EF45. Five points sharper but lightly cleaned and nicely retoned glossy steel brown and chocolate with hints of very faded red in protected areas. No notable marks, and the eye appeal is excellent for the grade. The best identifying defect is a very faint S-shaped struck-through line high on the neck. Terminal die state, die state i, with a continuous series of rim cud breaks over STATES. The cuds are clearly defined. Additional small rim cuds show from below the 18 to star 1 and from star 11 to star 13. Repunching remains visible on the date, clearest under the base of the 1. Finest of only 5 known in the terminal state. This is the Grellman plate coin for the die state in the 2001 edition of his book on the late date large cents. And it comes with a nice provenance. DWH #2181.
Estimated Value $200-UP.
