Lot 1083

1877. NGC graded Proof 67 Red & Brown. Lovely red, rose and iridescent blue toning. Only 900 Proofs struck. Popular key date. Both business strike and Proof Indian cents of the key-date 1877 issue benefit from enormous collector interest and constant demand. Most Proofs tend to be in the Proof 63 to 65, with a few superior examples in Proof 66 categories. The same occurs on the business strikes with MS64 and MS65 predominating. Then there is this marvelous piece, a coin unique in its PR67 category among examples graded by NGC. It richly deserves its the Superb Gem grade.

To put something of an anthropomorphic spin on things, the coin truly is boasting a full strike from the headdress feathers to all four diamonds on the ribbon end and a bold L. Justifiably so. No one who views it will disagree. The peripheral details, as well, are strictly razor-sharp, includiing the reverse details in the wreath, shield, and ONE CENT - all are unimpeachable. True to other Proofs, these have a bold N in ONE and EN in CENT. (For some reason business strikes show weakness here.) The fields gleam with lovely coppery red and brown highlights, gleaming with color, full to completeness with mirror reflectivity in the fields. Bowers' Indian cent guide explains that "the 1877 Proof Indian cent is a coin of incredible popularity and demand due to the overall rarity of the date (via related business strikes). Proofs are usually seen toned brown or red and brown, sometimes with a very attractive woodgrain effect." Let this be your guide when bidding. And come prepared for strong competition. Pop 1; none finer at NGC .
Estimated Value $9,000 - 10,000.
